I think I could write an entire book on the horses in my life from childhood onward. One of my two favorite horses were Papoose and Patches. Patches, especially, was an excellent listener who rotated her ears at the inflection in my voice and kept all my secrets (just as my horse Rosie does today).

The soulful excursions upon Patches back meant the world to me as I struggled with challenges at home and dreamed about my future. This horse was an excellent therapist, as most horses tend to be.

Today, Rosie is my favorite, a horse I rescued. She’s lived a remarkable 35 years — ancient for a horse, although she looks half her age.

Enjoy the photos of my merry band. Friends and visitors are always introduced to my small herd, and I hope they enjoy my equine trio — Rosie, of course, but also Babe and Guzi. I’m not alone in my enthusiasm and share some of my favorite “horse quotes” below:

“No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle.” ~ Winston Churchill

“Riding a horse is not a genle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion. It seizes a person whole and once it has done so, he/she will have to accept that his life will be radically changed.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

“No philosophers so thoroughly comprehend us as dogs and horses.” ~ Herman Melville

“His neigh is like the bidding of a monarch, and his countenance enforces homage. He is indeed a horse.” ~ William Shakespeare

The best friend a girl could ever have, Patches
